My wife and I work out of a mission center nestled at the base of the Jura mountains, not too far from Geneva. Lining the walls of our office are books, articles, journals, and dissertations dealing with missionary care. In this article, I would like to take you for a short tour of the office.
Specifically, I want to share a sampling of member care materials that we have found during the course of our geographic and Internet travels. These materials are comprised mostly of books published in English during the last 15 years. Collectively they represent much of the growing international “paper trail” for the field of member care. They are tools to facilitate the lifelong learning that can really help missionary longevity.1 Special thanks to the colleagues who reviewed the initial list and provided additional references and updates.
INTERNATIONAL MEMBER CARE
It is encouraging to see the rising interest in member care within the Newer Sending Countries (NSCs). We can see this in the slow but steady stream of written materials being authored by mission leaders and member care workers from NSC countries, mostly Asia and Latin America. In many cases, and not surprisingly, their writings are also quite relevant for the global mission community (e.g., Too Valuable to Lose, Taylor, 1997).
Member care, like missions, is becoming a two-way street: going from North to South, East to West, and vice versa. Nonetheless, a tremendous need exists to hear more from NSC colleagues (especially those from Africa and the Middle East/North Africa), as they build on the previous, predominantly Western materials and address many of the issues of interest to their own nation and region.2 Older Sending Countries (OSCs) have had a head start publishing member care materials, and this is reflected in the quantity of OSC materials (many from American and European authors) listed in this article. Over the next few years we hope to see many more NSC materials, including compendiums of articles focusing on regional member care issues.
TOURING THE LITERATURE TERRAIN
Just as every office needs a good system for organizing its books, so also does a bibliography. I have thus chosen to categorize the materials according to a member care model relevant across many organizational and national cultures.3 This model consists of five parts, or spheres (see 20 and 21). The eight categories (specialist domains) of Sphere 4 provide the main framework to organize the bibliography. I follow these categories with some general member care references from NSC regions, mostly from periodicals.
Most of the books are still in print, although some may be only available through the authors rather than through a book distributor. I have added some clarifying notes in parentheses after many of the references, and also some notes at the end of each of the eight categories (including Web sites). A few items are included that are not explicitly written for mission contexts, yet are still very relevant. At the end of the article I include additional sources and listings for written member care materials (see box on page 26).
